Newsletter – October 2022

As we all know the emissions ceiling for agriculture has recently been set at a level requiring a 25% reduction by 2030. That is a huge ask from all farmers across the county and we will all have to look at ways to reduce our environmental impact. The Hereford breed is in a good place to go some way to meeting these demands given its natural ability to mature at an early age with easy fleshing off grass.

Producer Group Trip

A group of 40 members and friends had a great trip recently to Clermont-Ferrand in central France, attending Sommet de l’Élevage and seeing the best that French agriculture has to offer. It was good for all to get away from the farm for a few days and to see agriculture from a different perspective.

Beef Genetics Sustainability Programme

We have made a substantial investment in a new beef genetics sustainability program. The first steps on the road to an enhanced sustainability policy for the Irish Hereford Prime beef brand has seen the group partner with Dovea Genetics and the Irish Hereford Breed Society, to identify and promote bulls capable of further improving the quality and substantiality credentials of our premium beef brand. The initiative in its first year saw the roll out of three new Hereford AI sires suitable for Irish dairy and suckler farmers. The first calves from these three bulls will be arriving in early 2023 and we look forward to seeing their progeny on the ground. Two additional bulls will also be available for this coming breeding season. Please get in contact with us if you are interested in sourcing any of these AI straws or calves for your farm.

The Ukraine Appeal

The Irish Hereford Breed Society and Irish Hereford Prime were delighted to be able to make a donation towards the Ukraine Crisis Appeal via the Irish Red Cross. Both parties donated €8555 to the charity by raising funds through a bucket collection, hosting an iDonate fundraising page online and by donating the full commission from the Premier Hereford Spring Sale and the following Hereford sale in Kilmallock. ABP made a very generous offer to double the amount fundraised by the Irish Hereford breed and to donate that entire sum to the Ukraine Appeal. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported the cause, made donations and to ABP for their contribution also.

Farmer of the Year

The selection process for this year’s winner is well underway. Farm visits to our short-list of selected farmers are happening at the moment and we will announce our winner via social media later in the year.
